If anyone had ever told me that one day I, a Greek destination wedding photographer, would cover an Ethiopian wedding with guests from America, Europe, Africa and Asia on an Italian island, I would have laughed. And I would have been wrong! Because it actually happened and I am truly happy and honoured to have been part of it…
The Story of an Ethiopian Wedding
I was on a pre-wedding sailing trip to Mykonos when Alpha and Alpha (oh, I forgot to mention that the bride and groom happened to have the same name!) got in touch with me concerning their wedding, which would take place in Capri, Italy. I was so excited that I didn’t have to think twice before I answered yes. I instantly had the feeling that it would be a dream wedding; and it turned out to be just that!
The wedding story started with one of the most amazing wedding sailing trips I have ever been on: a tour around the island of Capri and the Amalfi Coast with the lovely couple and their guests, who had come from all over the world –Ethiopia, London, Asia, and New York, the place where the couple first met and fell in love… The sun sparkled on the turquoise waters, the atmosphere was fantastic, champagne flowed abundantly, and it was an amazing experience to hear the sound of the traditional Ethiopian wedding ululation! Later, at the stunningly beautiful town of Capri, we all had dinner with lots of delicious Italian pizza and excellent wine.
The wedding day started in a stately private Italian villa that was a perfect example of classical architecture. Ethiopian women are known to be categorized among the most beautiful women in Africa and the bride was no exception to the rule! She looked radiantly happy as she stood by the side of the handsome and elegant groom.
Ethiopian Traditions & Dance
I was very fortunate to have the chance to work with Erin Lindeman, a very talented wedding planner with an international reputation, who coordinated every single detail absolutely perfectly. At the wedding reception, the tables were arranged in a straight line along rows of tall palm trees, creating an impressive result. The wonderful floral decorations and the candles added a romantic touch to the general picture. An interesting detail was the preparation of special mozzarella snacks by a chef on the spot during the cocktail party; they were indescribably tasty! Ethiopian music and traditional dances completed ideally a magical evening.
